Computex - AI means "All In"
In this video we approach the Computex 2024 announcements in the Linux lane. I am making this video because there is a ton of discussion about WIndows and Co-Pilot, but nothing on what is going on under the covers with Linux. This video is my attempt to address this. This is not a discussion of AI on Linux, its more of a discussion about when can we expect all these new machines to be fully functional on Linux.
AI Generated Thumbnail: The Poker Term "All In" Means to bet all you have, pushing all your chips to the center of the table. And I think that reflects where we are with AI right now.

Im not a systems designer or an OS programmer. Theoretically could Asahi linux provide support for EGPU over thunderbolt since Apple clearly doesn't want to implement it? Someone I remember saying it'd be very hard to get GPUs working with M1 silicon however GPU support on ARM machines isn't anything new considering there are plenty of machines with ARM CPUs that use PCIE GPU's.

I would think Linux/BSD/the open source space would be perfect for adopting ARM hardware outside of Macbooks, with most software being open meaning it can be recompiled for ARM by an army of developers. Let's hope Qualcomm gives good driver support and such though.

For people who have an old computer which can't upgrade to Windows 11, no problem as Linux will easily run on your old computer. Why would some idiot at Microsoft decide to cease support for their most popular operating system?

Switch to Linux, problem solved. Having said that I do have an old PC with Vista that I use for astrophotography which led to the conclusion that the best thing that happens to a Windows OS is end of life, no support means no intrusions by MS. Linux is the way to go to have a modern system IMO. Switched 12 years ago . Less resource intensive. Some whole O/Ss are less than 1gig while Windows is over twelve gigs. Mint is user friendly.and is I think a little over 1400 MB in size that includes the full office suite Libre Office and you don't have to buy features to optimize, they are included. All free unless you wish do donate to development team.

Three of the systems in my home are X99/Xeon based and all lack TPM 2.0, meaning they do not meet Win11 minimum hardware requirements. The upgrade from activated Win10Pro on all three was rather seamless for me. The solution is readily present and available. There are more than a few methods shown in RUclips...I followed the recommendations of "CyberCPU Tech": 1) Download from Microsoft's site the Windows 11 .iso file (image). From the Microsoft site, it's the third selection on the list "Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices". This file is about 6.4GB in size. I placed it in the download folder. Within that selection, pick the language that is the SAME as the language of your current activated Win10 OS. [You can unzip that file, I did not bother]. 2) I then MOUNTED that file and observed the virtual drive letter that the mounted image was assigned. [simple right click of mouse over that file with reveal the MOUNT command at top of menu] 3) I opened the Command Prompt (CMD) with Admin privileges. 4) Then, in the CMD window, I changed (cd:) to the virtual drive letter previously noted. 5) Then changed (cd:) to the "sources" subfolder within the .iso file 6) Then ran "setupprep.exe /product server" [note the space both before the forward slash ("/") and between "product" and "server"] Windows will then initiate the install upgrade (it will say SERVER install...but it will actually be the upgrade from your current Win10 OS). Within this process, I selected the retention of my settings, files, and apps. The upgrade went smooth as silk and I ended up with Windows 11 Pro 23H2. Various automatic upgrades followed to bring me to the most current Win11 Pro 23H2. My single use activation/license was, of course, retained. Even my customized task bar (with all shortcut icons) was retained. This worked consistently across all three of my PC's. Lastly, in the privacy/security settings, I reviewed and turned OFF all privacy-related approvals. I also turned off the AI feature (co-pilot).

It may go deeper than windows 10 vs 11. Anyway is not Windows yet a universal property under convention, not forgetting that convention is the law basis in most countries. I am actively looking for applications to replace those windows that I use that don't have a Linux version. Some already have a linux version. Pending a move to linux, depending on MS. If others think the same way as me then MS will take a hit and also developers of windows only applications will also miss out and take a hit in cancellations and upgrades. Put this together with many software companies insisting on new terms (in contradiction to the old terms, which were only available after purchase anyway, so actually illegal). New terms that give them the right to steal your data or kill your owned application or hosted data. It may be a bigger hit than MS is prepared to take and many well known application developers will also go by wayside. Or, will everyone yell and scream and just accept it as they did to get to this position over the last few years anyway. The world would be better off if America enacted some real consumer laws in America. That would stop these cowboys trying to rob the users of all the world by stealth where consumer laws are intentionally ignored and they impose the American business way. Am I being anti American? In this (note, this) Yes. Much American business stinks when not kept under consumer regulatory control. Also, I think its about time the countries that have laws against these cowboys practices use them as intended.

How about if I install Oracle VM on my Linux, and keep using windows 10 in emulation mode. Will that isolate me enough to provide a reasonable level of safety. I'm running Mint on Oracle VM now. How about reversing that to run Windoze in emulation. Well, that's my plan. Tell me if you think that won't be a good solution.

I don't believe we are close to the invention of AGI. Most things we hear about is hype to gain VC money, and most things we see are either not useful, a lie actually powered by mass human input, something that is already completed with typical algorithms, and nothing that is actually intelligent or truly impressive, just calculation type of processes.

Been thinking a lot on this stuff. Nividia really needs to make a desktop arm chip man. The HoneyComb LX2KSoC is designed by SolidRun and is primarily used as a Micro ATX ARM workstation. It has 16 ARM cores running at a 2GHz clock speed and supports a PCIe Gen 3 (x8) slot. The memory bandwidth of modern GPUs is much higher than the bandwidth of PCIe 3.0. This is because the GPU memory bandwidth is the speed at which the GPU can read data from or write data to its VRAM, which is much faster than the speed at which data can be transferred over the PCIe bus. The PCIe bandwidth can become a bottleneck if the GPU needs to frequently access data that is not stored in its VRAM and has to be transferred over the PCIe bus. However, this is less likely to be an issue with modern GPUs that have large amounts of VRAM. The Nvidia RTX 4090 is equipped with 24 GB of GDDR6X VRAM. DDR is higher performance than LDDR, and always will be, so even if the mobile arm chip has high VRAM for its chip, running a discreet GPU with high amounts of GDDR is always going to be higher performance.

My advice is what I did. I deleted Windows10 on my laptop, and downloaded (free) Linux Mint 17.3 (my old Toshiba is 32-bit). Instantly works great. No stalls. No dropouts. Very similar to Windows10. Also runs Windows apps directly. No W-INE program to run. Windows internal calls are imbedded in Linux. Hey, did I mention Mint runs nearly twice as fast as Windows? And it's FREE!!!

Hi Dj Ware, on almost half of your videos you are out of focus. I don't know if it's intentional. But from my understanding people are looking at you not at background , so i advise to put focus into manual mode , and lock it . perhaps make aperture smaller 5,6 - 11 rise iso . If focus for background is critical narrow aperture to f-11 on 35mm lens hypoerfocoal distance is about 1.5 meters so all objects from 1.5m will be in focus including you . Wanted to thank you for all work you are doing. My Linux journey started about 2 years ago and your videos are very helpful , especially educational content. There are another RUclipsrs that make "explain how Linux" videos buy personally for me your are the best coz you are able to explain the reason the principle underlying and only later give an advice ! The processor ID does not match any of the ones Qualcomm released at Comutex so could be an engineering chip, Windows version is incorrect for Snapdragon X support and it appears they made a rookie mistake of benchmarking in balanced mode. I'll wait for June 18th before forming any opinions.

I've developed some reservations concerning what currently passes for AI at this point in time. Part of it is concerned with security issues and part is use-case. The security issues that have come up, such as Microsoft's massive goof, are a concern but I have, as yet, failed to find a single personal use case for this technology. Seems like only a massive marketing effort to sell us new boards and chips. I like it that Linux is slow on the uptake sometimes. I'll wait. No Problemo. Thanks for the video D.J.! If someone uses Linux, it means they have a brain that they use - and someone with a brain that they use is far less dependent on AI than someone who uses Windows, iPhone or a Google Android device, all of which are made by evil corporations investing heavily into AI so that they mine your personal data as efficiently as possible to keep their shareholders happy. The benefits to Joe Public of AI are entirely secondary, albeit they will appear - but, from my perspective, AI exists primarily to allow already evil corporations to be more evil but in a stealthier manner - and the only people "shouting its praises" aside from CEOs and board members are lazy millennials or gen-xers who think it will let them get away with doing even less "thinking or doing" themselves. Linux is not evil, making it evil should not be encouraged. I have a brain that has served me well for several decades, I don't plan on switching it off yet.

  • @CyberGizmo

I think Linux is a much better ARM platform than Windows is, the reason is the Rasberry Pi, which began working with Debian in 2012. This of course became the Raspberry OS that we know of today. Debian 12 hosts over 94,225 packages for ARM, Ubuntu hosts over 78,348 packages for ARM, and Fedora 40 has 66,739 packages for ARM. I think you will find LInux a much better platform for ARM than that other OS. I have been running ARM based machines on Linux since 2016. PS its not meaningful to compare the number of packages between distros because of the way each one packages applications together to make a .deb or a .rpm package.
